Birthday portraits
A milestone birthday gift made from a lifetime of stories
For someone who does not need more things, the most meaningful gift may be the stories they rarely get to hear. A birthday portrait can bring together childhood, early adulthood, work, family life, and friendships that would otherwise stay in separate rooms.
Who can contribute
Invite siblings and relatives, school friends, former roommates, longtime neighbors, current and past coworkers, and newer friends. The range matters: each group remembers a different version of the person.
Let every era contribute something
The strongest contributions begin with one real moment. Useful starting points include:
- A childhood quality that never disappeared
- A turning point witnessed by an old friend
- A small kindness coworkers remember
- The story people still tell whenever their name comes up
More than a collection of signatures
A birthday card records who signed it. A Gathered Ink portrait preserves why those people care, including stories the recipient may not know others still remember.
How it works
Choose Birthday and name the person or people the portrait is for.
Invite people directly or send one shareable link. Contributors do not need an account.
Each person answers thoughtful prompts in their own words and at their own pace.
The host receives one written portrait shaped by the memories everyone shared.
